New Kingston Film Festival

This past weekend was the New Kingston Film Festival up in the Catskill Mountains in New York, and I was lucky enough to be able to attend with my wife. I would be lying if I said the festival went without a hitch…but we had a good time nonetheless in a very beautiful and scenic part of New York.

Unfortunately the weather didn’t really cooperate. It rained most of the time we were there, which forced us to have dinner at “the barn”, where we chowed down on Cha Cha Hut pork products and listened to some live music. Around 8 we headed about a mile down the road to a field behind a church where they had this giant inflatable screen setup. Everyone pulled in drive-in style and we awaited the start of the movies…that’s when things got interesting.

Just before the movies were scheduled to start, the inflatable screen buckled and folded over itself…several times. 🙂 The movies started about 30-45 minutes late, but hey, at least the screen was staying up. Quick Shop was supposed to screen around 12:15 AM, but because of the initial delay and some problems with one of the other DVDs, they decided to bump my movie up a bit sooner since I was in attendance.

So Quick Shop screened around 11:45 PM…the first 30 seconds of the film had no sound, but it eventually came on and everyone who was left seemed to enjoy it…there were cheers and horn beeping afterwards.

The next day I attended the Meet the Filmmakers event back at “the barn”, where the small audience was allowed to ask the filmmakers any questions they had about our films. I had to leave early because it was my oldest daughter’s birthday, but I learned a lot of interesting things from the other filmmakers.

It was a pleasure to meet the festival director Clark Shah-Nelson and his wife Seema. Really nice and down-to-earth people, who always maintained their composure and positive attitude even when things were going wrong. I also met Laura Israel, director of the feature documentary Windfall. This was a very interesting film about putting up wind turbines in the local area farmland…really makes you think twice about wind power.

So despite the bad weather and the technical difficulties, we had a good time and Quick Shop notched it third festival screening. You can check out some pictures from the festival on the Media page.
